FRIDAY | A leisurely solo drive to Lawrence, Kansas to meet up with two college friends for our annual get together. And when I say leisurely, I mean that most of the 3+ hour drive was on a two lane highway behind a boat or a combine or in a school zone or a speed trap. I've never in my life been so happy to see an interstate.
I'd never been to Lawrence but was pleasantly surprised. I love college towns. We enjoyed:
- Ingredient | Yummy Happy Hour! And art! I had a strawberry basil martini and a turkey burger, but the build your own salads looked amazing.
- Essential Goods | Handmade stuff! Kansas goodies! Many of the shops were open late for 'Final Fridays.' Really cool community.
- The Wagon Wheel | USA Today's #3 college bar in America! Being neither a college student nor KU fans, this place really just made us feel old. Particularly the breathalyzer mounted to the wall. Hooray!
- Bird Dog Bar / Oread Hotel | Did you know Kansas has hills? This hotel was on one of them. And they had amazing nachos.
SATURDAY | I lived in Missouri until I was 22 and this was only my second time to visit Kansas City. What?!? We went the super touristy route, met with another friend, and visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum and Plaza. They were both lovely, but it was a beautiful Saturday and there were people EVERYWHERE. And I wasn't in a real crowd pleasin' frame of mind.
Saturday night we met another friend for dinner (La Fuente) and drinks+jukebox (Do Drop Inn) in downtown Lee's Summit. I fell in love with a red neon heart. And our collective jukebox choices: David Bowie, Sugar Ray, Miranda Lambert, Shakira, Carly Rae Jepsen, Weezer, Journey... it was epic. We finished the evening... slash... morning... at the apartment I rented through AirBnb. Totally recommend giving their service a try if you haven't already. I've found some really great places to stay.
SUNDAY | Little sleep + goodbyes on a boat dock followed by three hours of driving, a kid pick-up, a 50th anniversary party for my inlaws, a kid return, and another family gathering to celebrate my birthday + my sister's birthday + my OTHER sister's birthday. Whew! Caffeine was my friend. So many good people in one day though, it was amazing! Favorite things: getting to hang out with two of my best friends every year, the boy falling asleep before we even got out of town (going AND coming back), my father-in-law giving the Olive Garden waitress the hardest time ('This is the fourth time this week we've pulled this stunt!'), dropping by our nephew's house for cake and photos, chatting with my sister about her future plans and how she may go to dental school, eating spaghetti and pie at my grandparents' house, and laughing into complete and utter exhaustion.
"Clear eyes, full heart."
